“I saw your brother the other day, by the park.” Jimmy commented nonchalantly whilst taking down another victim. It hadn’t taken much work to seal off the warehouse, trapping the workers inside. Some of them were dead before they knew what had happened. The rest were hiding among the crates, trying to avoid their fate. I had simply been waiting on the sidelines. I could get rid of their spirits as he went, but it was easier to do them all at once after he finished. Provided the cops didn’t show up.
I tried not to let it show, but Jimmy’s remark startled me. I’d never told him about my family, or anyone from my past, really. But beyond that, I hadn’t known Gavin was even in America. We never talked much, even before I got caught up with Jimmy.
“Really?”
“Yeah, Gavin, or something like that. He was with his girlfriend, I think. They think you’re dead.”
I laughed. Not at the thought I had died, Jimmy was volatile and I was often afraid he’d have an extra violent mood swing or change his mind about keeping me around. No, dying certainly wasn’t laughable. It was the idea of Gavin with a girlfriend. My brother was not the type to be ‘tied down’ with relationships. He had a tendency to push people away, even Jenny and me.
“Gavin, with a girl? Fat chance, sir.”
“No, really!” He assured me, spotting his next victim. “He had his arm around her shoulder and they were making goo-goo eyes. It was really gross.” He pulled his knife from the newly collapsed figure. I was still skeptical. Jimmy paused his search for blood to expand further on his encounter. “She was about my height, I’d say. And blonde. What was her name?”
I felt a chill go down my spine. “Mary?” He grinned
“That was it! Mary something-or-other! Cute couple. Would be cuter if they weren’t so alive.” He shrugged.
“And you’re sure they were... together?” I felt my knife, the silver one I use for exorcisms, grow heavy at my waist.
“Oh, definitely.”
He said it so cheerfully. So calmly. These weren’t people he knew. Nothing happened that he cared about. My blood rushed in my ears.
Suddenly my knife was flying past Jimmy’s head. He stepped back, eyes widened as they followed the flash.Iit buried itself in the throat of the man who had been creeping up behind Jimmy, hoping to strike before the murderer noticed. Hoping to save his own life. Jimmy turned to me, shock spread across his face, witnessing me take a life. He’d tempted be before, of course, but I got rid of the dead, not the living. He grinned as I pushed past him to retrieve my blade, wiping it clean.
“Let’s go.” I said.
